Le Petit Virunga Package (Bukima)

Le Petit Virunga package (Bukima) includes a 3 nights’ stay in Virunga National Park, a one nights accommodation at Bukima Camp, one night’s accommodation at Mikeno Lodge, mountain gorilla trek, volcano trek and one night on Nyiragongo volcano. This package departs Goma at 11:00 am on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Day 1: Guests arrive at the Grande Barriere border crossing by at least 10:00 am and they shall ensure to check-in with Virunga tourism office by 11:00am. The tourism office is conveniently located in the Grande Barriere border post building, opposite passport control. The guests will be given gorilla permits and volcano trekking permits as they check-in. These permits must be presented before the start of each of the treks. Once check-in is complete, guests will be transported to Bukima Camp in the Gorilla sector. On arrival at Bukima, lunch will be served and the afternoon can be enjoyed at leisure.

Day 2: In the morning the guests shall have breakfast, and later they will set off for the gorilla trek. The trekkers will meet their Ranger guides and local pisteurs. They will receive briefing about the gorilla trek before they embark on this activity. The gorilla treks usually take about 3 hours of hiking each way and they usually depend on the location of the group being trekked and the difficulty of the terrain of the land. Once the trekkers meet the gorillas, they will spend one hour with the gorillas and will later on return to Bukima camp. They will then be transported back to Mikeno Lodge where the remaining day shall be spent relaxing on the lodge terrace and some may decide to visit the gorilla orphans at the Senkwekwe Center.

Day 3: Early Morning at Mikeno lodge, guests will have breakfast and they shall be transported to the Kibati Ranger Post which is the departure point for the Nyiragongo volcano trek. When the trekkers reach kibati, they will be given a briefing and have the opportunity to hire porters who help them to carry their luggage. The climb up to the volcano summit usually takes around 4 to 6 hours and they shall spend the night at the summit.

Day 4: In the morning the climbers will leave the crater rim and start to descend back to Kibati. The descent usually takes about four hours. The guests will then be transported back to Goma town and will be dropped-off at the Grande Barriere border crossing.
