Le Petit Virunga Package (Mikeno)

Le Petit Virunga package is a safari that includes a 3 nights’ stay in Virunga National Park, 2 nights’ accommodation at Mikeno Lodge, a mountain gorilla trek, a volcano trek and one night at the Nyiragongo volcano. This package departs Goma in the morning at exactly 11:00 am on a Friday.

Day 1: The guests shall arrive at Grande Barriere border and cross by 10:00 am. The guests shall check in with Virunga tourism office by 11:00 am. The tourism oaffice is conveniently located in the Grande Barriere border post building, opposite passport control. The Virunga tourism office will provide guests with a gorilla trekking permit and volcano trek permits as they check-in. These two permits must be presented before the start of each trek. When the guests are done with the check in, they will be transported to Mikeno Lodge at the Park headquarters in Rumangabo. Once the guests arrive at Mikeno, they will be served late lunch and they can enjoy their afternoon at leisure, including exploring Rumangabo’s several nature trails, bird watching or paying a visit to the Congo Hounds.

Day 2: After an early breakfast at Mikeno Lodge, guests will set off for the gorilla trek at Bukima Ranger Post. On arrival to Bukima, trekkers will meet their Ranger guides and local pisteurs to receive a briefing before starting the gorilla trek. Treks usually require 1-

2.5 hours of hiking each way, depending on location of the group being trekked and the difficulty of the terrain. After spending the allotted hour with the gorillas, trekkers will return to Bukima camp and then will be transported back to Mikeno Lodge where the remainder of the day can be spent relaxing on the lodge terrace or visiting the gorilla orphans at the Senkwekwe Center.

Day 3: In the morning the guests shall have an early breakfast and will be transported to the Kibati Ranger Post, the main departure point for the Nyiragongo volcano trek. In the morning the climbers will receive a briefing and have the opportunity to hire porters who help them to carry their luggage up the volcano. The climb up the volcano takes around 4 to 6 hours. When the guest get to the top, they will spend an overnight on the summit.

Day 4: In the morning, the hikers shall start their descent from the volcano summit, to Kibati Ranger post. The average time spent while descending is about four hours. When the guests reach the bottom, they will be transported back to Goma town and will be dropped off at the Grande Barriere border crossing.
