Trip Description

Day 1: Connect from Kigali to Akagera National Park for the Ihema boat cruise

  • Transfer to Akagera: Meet up with your driver-guide as planned in the morning for a brief of your 5 day wildlife and primate safari in Rwanda. After the meeting and exchange of pleasantries, you will set out to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial grounds for a brief history of the 1994 genocide in the country. Connect to Akagera game lodge for check-in and have lunch.
  • In the afternoon, you will go for the Lake Ihema boat trip to see the animals that stay on the Lake like the hippos, crocodiles and the many bird species that can be spotted on this cruise. You will spend an hour and then drive back to your accommodation for the night. Have dinner and rest in preparation for the following day.

Day 2: Morning Game drive and evening cultural tour

  • Morning Game drive: Wake up to an early breakfast before you head out back to the park for the morning game drive. Reach the starting point by 9 am, pick up your ranger guide and drive into the park in search of the elephants, giraffes, rhinos, lions and the smaller game like the impalas, bushbucks. Get back to your hotel for lunch and rest a bit. 
  • Evening cultural tour: Later in the evening go for the cultural experience of Akagera getting back in time for dinner at your hotel as the night before. Spend a second night at Akagera Game lodge.

Day 3: Drive south to Nyungwe National Park.

  • Transfer to Nyungwe: After having breakfast at the hotel, you will set out to Nyungwe forest National Park via Kigali city with enroute visits of Butare Museum and the Nyanza King’s palace where you will see the long-horned cultural cattle. Have lunch and drive further through the stretch of Nyungwe forest arriving at your accommodation later in the evening. Check into your rooms, freshen up and connect for dinner at the hotel and spend a night in the cold Nyungwe forest hotel.

Day 4: Chimpanzee trekking and afternoon canopy walk

  • Chimpanzee trekking: One of the highlights of the trip is this day. Get up as early as 5 am to be in the forest early enough to trek the early raisers. Have a briefing at Uwinka by the park rangers on what to expect on this chimpanzee trek in Nyungwe. Move into the forest and trek for about 4 to 6 hours according to where the chimpanzees spent the night. The chimpanzees are active and playful animals so expect to see them bouncing from branch to branch while on the visit.

  • Canopy Walk: After the chimpanzee trek, you will have lunch and connect back to the park for the canopy walk. The Canopy walk in Nyungwe forest is a 200 metres long bridge suspended 60 metres above giving you the forest view from the top. The views are breath taking. Get back to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Drive back to Kigali for drop off

  • Drive back to Kigali: Have a leisurely morning, have breakfast and check out of your hotel and connect back to Kigali with your driver-guide arriving in the afternoon. You will have an enroute lunch and pass by the Kimironko market to purchase some souvenirs and also get the opportunity to interact with the Rwandan people. Your driver-guide will drop you at the agreed point of drop off be the airport or at your hotel as you will advise.
