Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo
Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo; These magical and prime beautiful twin lakes are situated down Volcano Muhabura that is near the border of Rwanda and Uganda particularly in the northern part of Rwanda, on the outskirts of Musanze, these twin lakes are near Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda, on a Rwanda safari you can explore the known homes of the gorillas with the presence of their blue water surrounded by the Virunga high hills. Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo are just separated by a 1 km wide strip of land.
Lake Burera and Ruhondo were formed by the result of the volcanic activity that is the largest River in Rwanda called River Nyabarongo used to flow northward to Ndorwa, and it’s said that long time ago this part was Rwandan side but currently is part of Uganda. The volcanic eruption that took place, volcanic eruption that happened in Volcanic region in the Northern Rwanda due to the Muhabura eruption currently is known as the dormant volcano, the lava flows from volcanoes blocked the Nyabarongo river’s channel and this is where the result came from to form these twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo where others call them the ‘’Lava dammed lakes’’ and divert of Nyabarongo river by flowing south east ward where it gets together with the Akanyaru River to form Akagera River.
These twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo have joined together to form the area surface of about 2800 ha. The two twin lakes together with its swamp Rugezi are the most super photographic destinations on a Rwanda safari with the serene and the magnificent scenic places for Bird watching activity. More so, Rugezi swamp is one of the known most seven important birding paradises on a Rwanda safari (IBAS). The lakes have got the blue waters that tend to surround the steep hills and the tall waterfall with the outlines of the nearby Virunga volcanoes that gives the destination the thrilling background.
