Mountain Sabyinyo is also among the chain of the eight Virunga volcanoes and it is located in Mgahinga national park in Uganda.
This mountain offer exceptional hiking experience in Uganda. It is a dormant volcano and therefore it poses no threat to you the hikers and the people around it.
Unlike the other volcanoes that are either on the border line or in one of the countries, mountain sabyinyo is at the point where the three Virunga countries Of Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC meet.
When you hike to the top people always joke about being in three countries at the same time with one Visa, It’s a magnificent feeling and you need not to miss it.
Sabyinyo is a local word used to mean “old man’s teeth” which is a tribute to the shape of this mountain that looks like an old man’s teeth.
Sabyinyo has a rugged terrain and has a lot of craters on its slope which creates a lot of ridges. The mountain unlike most of the others can only be trekked from Uganda and you will go through a challenging trail which will have handmade ladders to help you with the steep sections.
Sabyinyo like most of the Virunga volcanoes except the highest which is Karisimbi is a one day hike and it take about 4 hours to the top and four hours to descend. All this depends on other factors like speed and weather.
You will have chance to see the Rwenzori turaco which is an endemic of the area and when you get to the summit you will have reached the meeting point of the three Virunga Countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC.
